"What's a Shiba Inu?" You may ask. Shiba Inus are small dogs that originated in Japan. They are similar in appearance to the Akita, though much smaller in stature and have completely different temperaments. They are one of the few ancient dog breeds still in existence in the world today. Shibas are VERY intelligent dogs that are easy to train. They're easy to housebreak and in many cases will housebreak themselves. Little grooming is needed; they shed only twice a year and since their coat repels dirt and doesn't have that "doggie odor," they rarely need a bath unless they get muddy. They are GREAT with children and other animals as long as they are properly socialized as puppies. Obedience training is very important as they can be stubborn. Shibas were originally bred to flush birds and hunt small game and should always be on a leash, unless in a secured area, because of this prey drive. They rarely bark and bond very close with their families. They have very few health problems and have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
